Virginia Wesleyan Wins Game One of the Championship Series

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 29) – Cassetty Howerin drove in three runs and Hanna Hull pitched a one-hit shutout to lead top-ranked Virginia Wesleyan to a 5-0 victory over St. John Fisher in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Finals here Monday afternoon.

It was the first game of a best-of-three series between the two teams, who are set to meet again at 3:30 p.m. today.  An “if necessary” game would be played at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Howerin drove in the first run of the game for the Marlins with a bloop double in the third that scored Kiersten Richardson, who had a one-out single and stole second.  Howerin fouled off seven consecutive pitches in a 14-pitch at bat before dropping the ball in front of a diving left fielder.

Blake Henderson belted a solo home run to center field in the fifth to make it 2-0 and Howerin blasted a two-run shot to right-center field in the top of the seventh as the lead grew to 5-0.

Hull dominated in the circle, giving up a lone single in the fourth.  The freshman left-hander didn’t walk a batter and struck out 13 in recording her 32nd win of the season (32-3).

Howerin had two of VWC’s five hits in the game.
