St. John Fisher Advances to the Championship Series

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 28) – Sarah Kubik drove in three runs to help St. John Fisher College build a 4-0 lead and the No. 8-ranked Cardinals held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over Williams College Sunday afternoon to advance to the championship series in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals.

SJFC led 4-1 going into the seventh, but the Ephs scored twice to get within a run and had two runners on when the game ended on center fielder Julia Sortisio’s running catch in right-center.  The Cardinals (44-6) moved into the best-of-three series against the Texas-Tyler/Virginia Wesleyan game.

The championship series will consist of games at 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. Monday, with an “if necessary” game set for 11 a.m. Tuesday.

SJFC broke a scoreless tie in the third inning, getting a two-run single from Kubik and RBI double by Ashley Prince.  The lead grew to 4-0 in the fifth when Kubik smashed a solo home run to center field.

Williams finally got on the scoreboard in the sixth on Rebecca Duncan’s run-scoring double and nearly pulled even with a seventh-inning rally.

A lead-off walk and back-to-back singles by Brenna Martinez and Casey Pelz loaded the bases for the Ephs, who pulled within 4-3 on Jessica Kim’s one-out two-run single up the middle that left runners on the corners.

But SJFC pitching ace Lindsey Thayer escaped the jam, getting a foul out and then the fly ball to center field to end the suspense.

Thayer went the distance in the circle, striking out 10 and walking three in earning her Division III-leading 31st win (31-5).  Kubik had two of the Cardinals’ six hits.

Duncan had two of Williams’ six hits.  The Ephs finished the season 38-13.
