Virginia Wesleyan Advances to the Semi Finals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 27) – Jessica Lindsay’s two-run single highlighted a first-inning outburst that put Virginia Wesleyan College in control and the top-ranked Marlins went on to beat Illinois Wesleyan University 6-0 in the loser’s bracket of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals Saturday afternoon at the ASA Softball Hall of Fame Complex.

VWU scored four runs in the top of the first and added two more in the second to grab a quick 6-0 lead and Hanna Hull pitched a complete-game three-hitter.  It was a Division III-leading 50th win for the Marlins (50-3), who will meet No. 4-ranked Texas-Tyler at noon Saturday.

The defending national champion Patriots beat VWU 4-1 in Thursday’s first round.  The Marlins will need to beat UTT twice to advance to the best-of-three championship finals.

IWU saw its season ended at 37-15.

Virginia Wesleyan jumped on the Titans early, with Lindsay’s two-run single to left-center field the big hit.  Cassetty Howerin added an RBI single and Blake Henderson a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The Marlins pushed their lead to 6-0 in the second on Howerin’s sacrifice fly and Henderson’s run-scoring double.

Eight players had one hit apiece for VWC.  Hull struck out eight and walked three in a 152-pitch outing as the freshman left-hander improved to 30-3.
