Conference Rivals Clash for the Sixth time as Williams College Moves on to the Semi Finals

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 27) – Two near-by rivals fromMassachusetts clashed in an elimination game of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals Saturday afternoon, with Williams College earning a 4-1 victory over Amherst College at the ASA Softball Hall of Fame Complex

It was the sixth meeting between the New England Small College Athletic Conference rivals situated just 60 miles apart and the fifth win by the Ephs, who improved to 38-12.  Williams will face St. John Fisher at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and will need to beat the Cardinals twice to advance to the best-of-three finals.

The Mammoths ended their season at 34-12.

Amherst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a bases-loaded walk to Julia Turner and it stayed that way until the Ephs erupted for three runs in the fifth.

Brenna Martinez had an RBI single and Riley Salvo a sacrifice fly, with a wild pitch allowing another run in.  Williams pushed its lead to 4-1 in the sixth when Jessica led off with a single, took second on a wild pitch and scored on Rebecca Duncan’s double to right field.

The Ephs finished with 10 hits, getting two apiece from Kim and Duncan.  Mackenzie Murphy earned the pitching win in relief, throwing 2 1/3 shutout innings.

Sammy Salustri had two of Amherst’s six hits.
