Williams Holds Off St. Kate To Move On

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 26) – Margo Beck and Brenna Martinez drove in two runs apiece as Williams College built a big lead before holding off St. Catherine 6-5 in the loser’s bracket of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals Friday afternoon at the ASA Softball Hall of Fame Complex.

The Ephs led 6-0 after five innings, but had to hold on after SCU erupted for five runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Williams improved to 37-12 on the season and will face the loser of the Texas-Tyler/Amherst in another elimination contest at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.  The Wildcats finished the season 38-13.

The Ephs exploded for four runs in the third to take control, getting a two-run double from Beck, an RBI double from Jessica Kim and a sacrifice fly from Mackenzie Murphy.

Williams made it 6-0 in the fifth on Brenna Martinez’s two-run single up the middle, but SCU didn’t go down without a fight.

The Wildcats turned three walks and three hits into five sixth-inning runs, with Ashley Sis’ two-run double the big blow.  Sammie Galvez and Kylie Macziewski added RBI singles and SCU scored another run on a wild pitch to make it 6-5.

Reliever Rebecca Duncan came on in the sixth to get Williams out of that inning and then put the Wildcats down in order in the seventh to preserve the win and earn her second save of the season.

Beck, Martinez and Kim had two hits each to lead Williams’ nine-hit attack.
