St. John Fisher Wins on Throwing Error in the seventh

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 26) – Emma Savas scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift No. 8-ranked St. John Fisher to a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 25 Illinois Wesleyan in the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Finals Friday afternoon at the sun-baked ASA Hall of Fame Softball Complex.

Savas used her speed to leg out an infield single to start the seventh and went to second on a groundout to the pitcher before scoring on Julia Sortisio’s fly out to right field.  Savas tagged on the play and advanced to third before scooting home with the winning run when the throw from right got past the third baseman.

The Cardinals (43-6) moved into Sunday’s winner’s bracket finals against an opponent to be determined.  IWU (37-14) will face Virginia Wesleyan in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Pitching dominated the game as SJFC’s Lindsey Thayer allowed six hits and IWU’s Brea Walker five.  Thayer struck out 12 and walked four in improving to 30-5, while Walker fanned four and walked two in dropping to 17-5.

The Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the fourth when Sarah Kubik reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Genevieve Paeglow’s single through the right side.

The Titans tied it in the top of the sixth after Sydney Alery lashed a lead-off triple to left field and scored one out later on Shelby Fulk’s double to left-center.  IWU put two runners on in the top of the seventh with one out, but Thayer got out of the jam and the Cardinals won it in their final at bat.
