Thayer's No-Hitter Fuels St. John Fisher to Victory

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 25) – Lindsey Thayer threw her third no-hitter of the season and Sarah Kubik drove in the only two runs of the game to propel No. 8-ranked St. John Fisher College to a 2-0 shutout of No. 19 Williams College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Finals Thursday night at OGE Energy Field.

It was the 23rd win in the last 24 games for the Cardinals, who improved to 42-6 in moving into Friday’s 4 p.m. second-round game against Illinois Wesleyan.  The Ephs fell to 36-12 and will take on St. Catherine in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Thayer dominated in the circle like she has all season, retiring 21 straight batters after giving up a walk to open the game.  The junior right-hander -- who entered the tournament leading Division III in earned run average (0.42) and strikeouts (415) -- fanned 11 in recording her 14th shutout.

St. John Fisher took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first without hitting the ball out of the infield.  Julia Sortisio drew a lead-off walk, went to second on Katie Mazierski’s bunt single and advanced to third on Ashley Prince’s sacrifice before scoring on Kubik’s groundout to second base.

The Cardinals added an insurance run in the sixth when Prince doubled to left field and Kubik followed with an RBI single to center field.
