Illinois Wesleyan Moves on with Strong Pitching and Hitting

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 25) – Sam Berghoff had three hits and knocked in three runs while Mackenzie Marquis pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Illinois Wesleyan past St. Catherine 7-0 Thursday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship Finals at OGE Energy Field.

The Titans scored all their runs in the first three innings to seize quick control, taking advantage of six errors in addition to collecting 10 hits.  IWU improved to 37-13 and moved into Friday’s second round at 4 p.m. against the winner of the St. John Fisher-Williams contest.

Berghoff’s 3-for-4 performance at the plate paced the Titans, who also got two hits each from Jillian Runyon, Julie Josten and Stephanie Prentice.

Berghoff had a run-scoring single in the first and IWU scored another run on an error to go ahead 2-0, then added three runs in the second with the help of three fielding miscues by the Wildcats.  Berghoff’s two-run triple in the third make it 7-0 and completed the scoring.

Marquis went the distance in the circle, scattering five hits while walking one and striking out one in improving to 29-6 on the season.

St. Catherine fell to 38-13 and will face the St. John Fisher-Williams loser in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
