World Team Trials

    The 2011 Wrestling World Team Trials took place at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City from June 9 to June 11. The event included the three Olympic Styles of wrestling: Men’s Freestyle, Greco-Roman, and Women’s Freestyle. The winners will represent the United States in Istanbul, Turkey at the 2011 World Championships in September.
    Many wrestlers who had previously competed returned for the event. Cael Sanderson, 31, participated in the tournament for his first major wrestling event in more than seven years. He stopped wrestling competitively after winning an Olympic gold medal in 2004. He swept Jake Herbert, who had made the U.S. World Team in 2009 and 2010 and won the U.S Open this past April, to earn his spot on the 2011 U.S. World Team. He also made the U.S. World Team in 2003 and earned a silver medal at the 2003 World Championships. He coached Penn State to a NCAA team title last March.
    Other returning U.S. World Team members included Mike Zadick, J.D Bergman, Faruk Sahin and Kelsey Campbell, all who failed to advance to the second day. Greco-Roman wrestlers Joe Betterman, Jake Fisher and Justin Ruiz, all past trial champions, earned a spot on the U.S World Team again. Returning women freestyle competitors, Elena Pirozhkova and Clarissa Chun also made the team again. The winners for the event are listed below:

     Men’s Freestyle Winners:
    55 kg/121 lbs – Nick Simmons won the series against Sam Hazewinkel 2 -1.
    60 kg/132 lbs – Reece Humphrey won again Shawn Bunch 2-0. The final selection at this weight class for the U.S. World Team will be determined when Humphrey and Bunch compete at an international event, later this summer.
    66 kg/145 lbs – Teyon Ware won the series 2 matches to 1 against Brent Metcalf.
    74 kg/163 lbs – Jordan Burroughs defeated Andrew Howe in a 2-0 series.
    84 kg/185 lbs Cael Sanderson won the series against Jake Herbert, 2 matches to 0.
    96 kg/211.5 lbs – Jake Varner swept Chad Hanke to win the series 2-0.
    120 kg/ 264.5 lbs – Trevel Dlagnev won the series 2 matches to 1 against Steve Mocco.

     Greco- Roman Winners:
    55 kg/121 lbs – Spenser Mango won the series 2 matches to 0 against Paul Tellgren. 
    60 kg/132 lbs – Joe Betterman won the series 2 matches to 0 against Jeremiah Davis.
    74 kg/173 lbs – Ben Provisor won the series 2 matches to 1 against Jake Fisher.
    84 kg/185 lbs – Chey Haight won the series 2 matches to 1 against Jordan Holm.
    96 kg/211.6 lbs – Justin Ruiz won the series 2 matches to 0 against John Lorenz.
    120 kg/264.5 lbs – Dremiel Byers won the series, 2 matches to 0 against Timothy Taylor. 

     Women’s Freestyle Winners:
    48 kg/105.5 lbs – Clarissa Chun won the series 2 matches to 0 against Alyssa Lampe.
    55 kg/121 lbs – Helen Maroulis won the series 2 matches to 0 against Ashley Hudson.
    63 kg/138.75 lbs – Elena Prozhkova won the series 2 matches to 0 against Adeline Gray.
    72 kg/ 158.5 lbs – Ali Bernard won the series 2 matches to 0 against Iris Smith.

     In the wake of this week’s devastating storm in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, the Big 12 Conference is postponing the start of the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship.

    The championship, originally set to begin on Wednesday, May 22, at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in a double-elimination tournament format will now begin on Thursday, May 23, and will utilize a pool play format.
